Sample 11-day Japan Highlights itinerary
The point of this route is simple: see the main highlights while keeping hotel changes to a minimum. Tokyo and Osaka are the two main bases, with Mount Fuji, Kyoto and Nara added as day trips.
Travel to Tokyo
Fly from your preferred Australian departure city to Tokyo. Your exact airline, routing and arrival airport will depend on your dates and the flight options that suit you.
Settle in and explore at your own pace
Keep the first full day flexible after the flight. Explore Shinjuku, visit Meiji Shrine, discover Harajuku or take in the city views from one of Tokyo’s observation decks.
See one of Japan’s best-known regions
Take a guided day trip from Tokyo to the Mount Fuji and Hakone area. The exact route can vary with the tour selected, weather and local conditions, and Mount Fuji views cannot be guaranteed.
Another day to make Tokyo your own
Use your second free day for traditional neighbourhoods, shopping, museums, food experiences, teamLab or a theme-park day depending on your interests.
Travel by Shinkansen
Travel from Tokyo to Shin-Osaka by bullet train. Reserved seating and luggage arrangements can be included, then continue to your Osaka hotel for the next part of the trip.
Temples, shrines and Nara’s deer
Join a guided day trip covering key sights in Kyoto and Nara. This gives you a structured way to see both areas while keeping Osaka as your hotel base.
A free day in Osaka
Explore Osaka Castle, Umeda and Dotonbori, or use the day for Universal Studios Japan if that is high on your list.
Discover the city through its food
Add a guided food experience to explore local dishes and neighbourhoods without having to work out where or what to order.
Keep the final full day flexible
Use the day for shopping, more Osaka sightseeing or a nearby day trip. Depending on your interests and pace, options could include Kobe, Himeji or another part of the Kansai region.
Finish the trip without unnecessary rushing
Transfer to the airport and fly home. Your final timing will depend on the airline and route selected, and the itinerary can be adjusted if you would rather add more nights before returning home.
What can be arranged for your trip
This is a sample itinerary rather than a fixed package. I can build the main travel components around your dates and then add or remove experiences to suit you.
I can arrange
- Return or multi-city international flights from your preferred departure city
- Tokyo and Osaka accommodation based on your preferred hotel standard and room needs
- Airport transfers where they make sense for your arrival and departure
- Reserved Shinkansen travel between Tokyo and Osaka
- Luggage forwarding or large-luggage arrangements where appropriate
- Mount Fuji and Hakone day touring
- Kyoto and Nara touring
- Osaka food experiences
- Theme-park tickets, additional day trips and other activities you want included
- Travel insurance options
We can adjust
- Your departure city and travel dates
- The number of nights in Tokyo or Osaka
- Hotel standard, location and room configuration
- How much guided touring you want
- Free days and theme-park time
- Additional stops such as Hiroshima, Miyajima, Atami, Hokkaido or other regions
- The overall pace for children, older travellers or anyone who prefers less walking
- Trip length if 11 days is too short or too long for you
Why the two-base approach works
You unpack in Tokyo, move once by Shinkansen to Osaka, then use day trips for several of the major sights. That means less packing, fewer hotel check-ins and more time actually experiencing Japan.
Still deciding how you want to travel Japan?
This page is built around a two-base itinerary. If you are still comparing regions, seasons or a slower multi-generational route with more overnight stops, our main Japan destination guide goes into those options in more detail.

Is this a fixed package?
No. This is a sample itinerary designed to give you a practical starting point. The dates, flights, hotels, trip length and experiences can all be adjusted around your travel plans.
Can I travel on different dates?
Yes. Tell me when you would like to travel, even if you only know the month or approximate period, and I can look at options for those dates.
Can the itinerary be changed?
Yes. You can add or remove destinations, change the number of nights in each city, include more free time, add theme parks or day trips, or slow the pace down. Larger changes will affect the final price.
Is this a group tour?
No. The overall holiday is planned for you. Some sightseeing experiences may be shared guided tours, but you are not travelling as part of a Roam Wisely group.
Can flights be included?
Yes. Flights can be included from your preferred departure city. I’ll compare suitable options based on your dates and the itinerary we are building.
How much will the trip cost?
The price depends on your dates, departure city, traveller numbers, room requirements, hotel standard and the experiences you choose. Once I have those details, I can price the version of the trip that suits you.
Are Mount Fuji views guaranteed?
No. Mount Fuji visibility depends on weather and local conditions, so a clear view cannot be guaranteed on any particular day.
